The Nine Arch Bridge, which is at 3,100m above sea level, is located on the Demodara circle, and is one of the most famous attractions in Ella. Known for its unique nine arches set amidst the lush forests, the views from this bridge are truly breathtaking.
Adams Peak is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the hill country, Sri Lanka. The climb to the summit is considered a spiritual experience, and the panoramic views from the summit are absolutely breathtaking. By road it is about 200 km, roughly 5 to 6 hours by private car or 6 to 7 hours by bus. The scenic hill-country train normally takes about 9 to 10 hours.
As of July 2026 the direct Colombo to Ella train is not running end to end, following the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The most scenic section, Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla, resumed on 20 June 2026, while the upper line toward Kandy is still under repair, with full service expected by late 2026 or early 2027. Please confirm the latest status with Sri Lanka Railways before you travel.
The most reliable option is a private car or driver, about 5 to 6 hours. To still enjoy the famous train views, travel by road to Nanu Oya and board the restored Nanu Oya to Ella scenic train.
A private car with driver typically costs around USD 65 to 125. Buses cost only a few dollars. Train tickets range from about LKR 310 in 3rd class to LKR 7,000 or more for a reserved 1st class air-conditioned observation seat.
Reserved seats open 30 days before travel on the Sri Lanka Railways portal at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk and sell out quickly for the Ella route, so book as early as possible. Unreserved tickets are sold at the station on the day.
