The road distance is about 75 to 80 km along the winding A5 through the Ramboda Pass. Allow roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by private car (more with photo stops) or about 3 to 4 hours by public bus.
As of July 2026 the Kandy to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) train is suspended following the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla section resumed on 20 June 2026, but the upper line reconnecting Kandy is expected only by late 2026 or early 2027. Please confirm the latest status with Sri Lanka Railways before you travel.
With the direct train suspended, a private car or taxi is the best option and lets you stop at Ramboda Falls and a tea estate on the way. Public buses run frequently and cheaply from Kandy's Goods Shed bus stand. To ride the scenic train onward, travel by road to Nanu Oya first.
A private car or transfer usually costs around USD 35 to 70 one way, and a full-day sightseeing tour more. Public buses cost only about USD 1 to 2. Reserved train fares vary by class when the line is running.
